I am proud and honoured to be President of Widnes RUFC for the 2007/8 season. (It doesn't seem that long ago when I played my first club game in 1963!) Last season, our 1st team overcame a crippling injury list to recover and finish strongly in 6th position, in the Euromanx South Lancs/Cheshire 1 league. It was a tremendous effort by what is essentially a very young side. They showed character and determination which will stand them in good stead for the coming season. The 2nd team found the going too tough after their promotion, but stuck to their task in admirable fashion. The 3rds(vets) completed their first season of league rugby finishing mid table, - well done to everyone involved. The Colts had a mixed season results wise, and also provided some players to the 1st team. Thanks to Paul Newall and all those involved. Junior rugby continued to do well, but there are some ominous gaps in year groups which are tempting Widnes boys to play for other clubs in the area. The club cannot survive without this conveyor belt of players and we must all strive to ensure a higher percentage pull through to senior rugby. I would like to publicly thank all our sponsors and advertisers for their continued loyal support of our rugby at Heath Road, and hope that they enjoy their partnership with us. Let battle commence, here's to 2007/ 8 season and let players and spectators alike enjoy their rugby.
